Environmentally responsible
Campus serves as
staging area for
Mountain Climbing
Training in the
Cascades and the
Himalayas.
The NOLS campus is located near
the foothills of the Cascades.
Situated along a ridge at the top
of a wooded slope, the buildings
protect the surrounding
wetlands. The school serves as
a staging area for training and
climbing in the Cascades and
the Himalayas. The site includes
administrative offices, staging
areas, equipment storage, a
kitchen and a dining area that
seats 60 people. Materials and
construction assemblies were
incorporated that were sensitive
to the environment.
The project incorporated simple
construction techniques, i.e.; dirt
floors, pellet stoves for heating
and fiber cement siding, to meet
a profoundly modest budget of
$34/sf.Additional projects for
this client included:
-A remodel/addition for the
Lander, Wyoming site; 80,000 sf,
$4 million
- Master plan evaluation of
facilities at NOLS locations in
Sedro Wooley, Washington;
Boulder, Wyoming; Anchorage,
Alaska; and Baja, Mexico; Kenya
and Chile.
